When I was three years old my parents sat me down to tell me I was going to have a baby sister, I asked if we could get a piano instead.
When I was eight we got a piano and had it tuned. I was fascinated by how it worked and how the tuner could tune it just by listening. When he finished with our piano I even followed him to the neighbors house and watched him tune their piano. He was very patient and answered my many questions. I decided that I wanted to be a piano tuner when I grew up.
It has been 40 years since that day, and I am still constantly learning new and fascinating things about music, the piano and the science and history behind this amazing instrument.
Yamaha Golden Ticket Winner
In the fall of 2025 Yamaha had it’s grand opening of their California campus. As part of the festivities they held a aural piano tuning contest. Technicians auditioned from around the US and I was among the 5 selected for their Golden Ticket. They flew an instructor in from their Japan factory and we had a week of advanced training in Aural Tuning and Voicing through Regulation. Plus, an offer of ongoing mentorship and future training opportunities.
